Description of the original sword written by David Stříbrný :

We present the complete sword that was found in the mound C-15 in Gnёzdovo, Russia, in 1874. The mound is dated to the second quarter of the 10th century. The sword was stuck in the ground near the urn with cremation remnants. The length of the sword is 98.8 cm. The hilt belongs to Petersen type E, more specifically to E1 variant.
The composite upper hilt is formed by the base and the pommel that are hollow and pinned together with two pegs. The base is 2.2 cm high, while the pommel is 5.7 cm high. The base is 8.4 cm long and 0.9 cm thick. The handle reaches the length of 8.8 cm. The cross-guard is 10.9 cm long, 2.2 cm high and 3.1 cm thick. The hilt is decorated with 1.5-2 mm wide pits, placed in the checkered pattern. The checkered pattern consists of nine lines on the cross-guard and the upper guard. Between the pits, we can clearly see an incomplete decoration of inlayed silver wires with a density of 25 wires per cm. The pommel is separated into three fields by twisted silver wires. On the bottom side of the base and on both sides of the cross-guard, paired protrusion can be found, placed in 1.5-2 mm wide pits and surrounded by four or five other pits. The meaning of this is unclear; protrusions probably imitate rivets or they served to hold decorative sheet metal plates.
The blade is 82 cm long, 6.4 cm wide and 0.5 thick by the cross-guard. On both sides, we can see marks made of simple iron rods; there is an +ULFBERH+T inscription on the one side, while the other side is decorated with vertical lines and spirals.
